ClarityCue is a mobile app our team designed to help users manage short-form media consumption in a healthier and more intentional way. The project explores how short-form content affects attention, mental well-being, and digital habits, then translates those insights into practical in-app features.
the problem
Short-form media is deeply embedded in everyday life. Many users experience reduced focus, emotional fatigue, and high screen time but do not have tools that help them manage these habits in a supportive way.
Three primary groups were identified:
• Users
• Developers
• Experts
Each group plays a unique role in shaping how people interact with short-form content.
primary research
We interviewed users, developers, and experts to understand their experiences with scrolling, emotional triggers, dopamine cycles, and digital boundaries.
These insights grounded our app in real-world behaviors.
Cultural Probe Insights
Key patterns included:
• Instagram was the most used platform
• Most participants scrolled longer than intended
• Gen Z felt the most guilt about screen time
• Older generations scrolled less but still lacked balance
Affinitization
We sorted more than 400 data points into 11 thematic areas. These themes included attention span issues, emotional regulation, desire for meaningful content, and the need for healthier digital habits.
Insight framework
The insights guided four main design needs for the app:
• Emotional well-being
• Guided interaction
• Reflective consumption
• Retention and action
These became the foundation for our feature development.
Key Features and Solutions
ClarityCue is a mobile app built around intentional, supportive digital habits. Each feature is based directly on our research and is designed to help users stay aware, stay balanced, and stay connected in a purposeful way.
Collect and Connect
A feature that encourages intentional social engagement.
When mindless scrolling is detected, the app prompts the user to reconnect with others through meaningful interactions rather than passive viewing.
Curated Consumption
A tool that improves the quality of the algorithm.
Users still scroll, but the app adjusts recommendations toward positive, uplifting content that aligns with personal goals.
Mindful Breaks
Built-in prompts that guide users through quick resets such as breathing, stretching, or emotional check-ins.
These breaks help users interrupt autopilot scrolling and regain awareness.
Keeping Calm
A calming mode that lowers overstimulation within the app.
Filters help reduce intense content and guide the user toward gentler browsing that supports mental clarity.
style guide
ClarityCue uses a soft color palette, friendly typography, and simple iconography to reinforce a calm and approachable experience. Alexandria is used for headings and Montserrat for body text to maintain readability and warmth throughout the app.
final takeaway
ClarityCue transforms short-form media into an experience centered on awareness, emotional balance, and intentional use rather than distraction or overstimulation.
